What is a DWI/DUI Assessment?
When a person is arrested for “Driving Under the Influence” (DUI), or “Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), the court will likely require the offender to undergo a substance abuse evaluation at some point during the criminal proceedings. This evaluation is used to identify the possible presence and extent of an offender’s drug/ alcohol problem.
This evaluation consists of a detailed interview with a certified treatment provider who reviews the offender’s substance abuse history, criminal background, driving record, and any subsequent arrest reports. If the evaluation determines that an offender has a substance abuse condition,
the offender will receive treatment recommendations depending on their
individual case. Treatment could include scenarios such as:

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and/or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings
-
substance abuse education or counseling sessions
-
random drug and alcohol testing
-
outpatient treatment programs
-
individual or group treatment sessions
Failure to complete an evaluation or treatment program can result in stiffer legal penalties and can hinder an offenders driving privileges.
